Ample space, cheap electricity and an affordable cost of living could help lure Samsung to Taylor, Texas, a small town northeast of Austin that is now officially vying to win the company’s $17 billion semiconductor plant.

The South Korean chipmaker is taking the rare step of pitting two Texas counties in the same metropolitan area against each other for the game-changing project that could bring 1,800 additional jobs to Central Texas.

“We have 2 million to 2.5 million square feet of distribution and manufacturing users that we are actively in conversations with” for potential leases, McAlister said in a phone interview. “The market reception has been fantastic. We have not had any conversations with Samsung, but we’d love to.”

McAlister said there is about 400 acres available for development in RCR Taylor Logistics Park with the remaining 300 acres taken up by roads, detention ponds and rail infrastructure.

Key Factors

Electricity could be the linchpin for Samsung’s decision. Just a couple weeks after Samsung filed for its application with Manor Indepdent School District to locate a plant near its existing plant in East Austin, winter storm Uri slammed into the region constraining power supplies for several days as the Texas grid failed in frigid temperatures.

Incentives

Samsung’s application with Taylor Independent School District was approved June 30 by the district’s board of trustees, according to Community Impact.

Samsung already purchased about 258 acres adjacent to its existing Austin campus at 12100 Samsung Blvd., where it had been speculated it would build out its expansion. The campus currently houses about 3,000 employees and is one of the world’s most advanced semiconductor manufacturing facilities. Samsung first opened the campus in 1996 and has since spent more than $17 billion on expansions totaling 2.45 million square feet.
