Commercial construction firm Flintco LLC will build a 90,000-square-foot cargo facility at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Air cargo activity is exceeding capacity at the airport, a situation sure to persist as people and companies continue to relocate to the area and e-commerce companies expand distribution operations, such as Amazon.com Inc. The new cargo facility, which is estimated to cost $16.5 million, is just one of the many expansion priorities at ABIA to keep up with growing demand.

Eric Churchill, director of business development at Flintco, said he expects construction to begin in April. Austin City Council on Nov. 4 authorized staff to award Flintco the construction work.

“The city wants it to go even faster than whatever we can propose, The project will be on 12 acres on the northwest side of the airport, on Freight Lane where other cargo facilities are located.
